We are so PROUD to announce the success of the inaugural year of White County High School’s very own White County Mountain Bike Club (“WCMBC”). Currently, there are seven White County High School students and several volunteer parents as well as a few local sponsors, including Woody’s Mountain Bikes, who are involved with the club. And though the club consists of only boys at this time, it is open to girls (come on Girls!!). And what’s more? These club members are riding their bikes all over the beautiful White County forest service roads and trails, as well as racing in bike events all around Georgia. The club is participating in the following upcoming races: October 11, 2015, at Heritage Park in Watkinsville; and November 1, 2015, at University of North Georgia, Gainesville Campus. Future race dates will be determined.
When not practicing and racing, the club members participate in trail work days at Yonah Preserve Trails, in hopes that Yonah Preserve Trails will be its home trail once it’s developed. The club members are also participating in community activities to help raise awareness and money. Recently, the club had a booth at the White County Agrifest, wherein they raised over $300. All donations go to help pay for gear and bike-related needs for the club members — jerseys, kits (as in pants), shoes, helmets, etc.
WCMBC is part of the Georgia High School Cycling League, which was organized in 2013 to provide competitive mountain biking programs for Georgia students in grades 9 through 12. With the cooperation of local race organizers, partners, and sponsors, the Georgia High School Cycling League is able to provide a high quality mountain racing experience. It believes that mountain biking is the ‘T-Ball’ of cycling, and regardless of ability level, the League is committed to providing a positive experience for all student-athletes.
The club’s national association is the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (“NICA”). Founded in 2009, NICA develops interscholastic mountain biking programs for student-athletes across the United States. NICA provides leadership, services and governance for local leagues like ours to produce quality mountain bike events, and supports every student-athlete in the development of strong body, strong mind and strong character through their efforts on the bike.
